The story begins with the description of the Philadelphia city and one of common middle-class families of it - Cowperwoods. A middle-ranking clerk Henry Worthington Cowperwood ,and his wife had three beautiful children, but the most budding was Frank. From the early childhood he was especially attentive to his father's business and insightful enough. He became interested in banking and economic sphere when he was only 10 and he was involved in the entrepreneurial crafts when he was only 13. He was a real leader , brave and terse, beautifully built, confident and purposeful young man.
One day, his ankle from Cuba, Seneca Davis arrived to meet their family, and it was a planter, slave owner and quite financially established man, that was extremely confident, that young Frank would be able to be a great financier one day and gave boy a gold coin of 10 dollars. And of course, Frank, as a farsighted person decided to put the money into circulation. And in that time he fell in love with a young lady , a wife of Mr. Sample - an owner of a shoe store. He couldn't his feeling, because he used to trust his self-consciousness, to think carefully and frisky, but his heart was against his mind.
